I was just looking at the book jacket for thirtynothing and thinking how beautiful it is and it occured to me to wonder what you lot of the 'new look' cover for a Friend of the Family. If you haven't seen it, you can find it on Amazon.co.uk. Do you think it's an improvement on the old look? Does it send out the right message about the type of book it is? Is it appealing?
My jury's still out on it, but I'd be fascinated to hear what you all think. |

Hi LisaJay
Looking back at thirtynothing and comparing it to Friend of the Family, I just think Friend of the Family just looks a little more of a grown-ups book. I personally prefer the old style covers, they are more fun and when the first book came out it was the fact that they looked new and there was nothing very similar around that prompted me to pick it up and buy it. Having said that, the new one is a bit different, a bit more grown up, its probably a natural progression and will pull in a new audience. It definately won't stop me buying it even though I like the older style better!

Lisa,
I love the new cover for 'Friend of the Family'. The earlier covers were cool, but also they strongly identify the books as chick-lit. Now, I don't have anything against chick-lit, but I think your books have progressively moved away from the usual chick-lit topics, and it's good to see that they covers are reflecting this. From reading your guestbook a (fairly) common theme seems to be comments from men saying things like, 'I pinched this book from my girlfriend and, to my surprise, I loved it!' Since what you write about appeals to such a wide audience, I can only guess that the reason that blokes come across your books in this way is that they look at the books on the shelf and don't think the covers are masculine enough for them (aren't blokes strange?! My boyfriend constantly moans that girls have so many more clothes shops than men, but then turns his nose up at anything in Topman - they're such label-fiends!) Anyway, what I'm trying to say (in a roundabout way) is that the new covers should appeal to a wider audience, more in line with your writing, which can only be a positive thing. And, anyway, it's not as if the new cover is so far removed from the old ones - we still have similar lettering! I hope the latest book is going well ... and I look forward to seeing you at a book signing/reading somewhere soon! |

Hi There! Being a newbie reader to your books I have to say the first book I bought was Friend of the family, and although I'm quite ashamed to admit to this, I usually always buy books by literally 'judging it by it's cover'
I found the cover very interesting, It made me pick it up to look at what was on those shelves!
Of course I read the whole book in 2 nights and was compelled to buy the rest of your books, I now only have Ralph's party left to read and am sure I won't be disappointed.
Your old style covers personally give me a fun and energetic impression, whereas the new style gives a relaxed and warm feeling.
Both good vibes but different.
I am dreading finishing ralph's party as that's the last of your books until the next, for which I cannot wait for!
So good luck and I sooooo look forward to it

I've got to say it was a bit strange, seeing the new cover, it was the first thing I noticed when i picked it up, Personally i prefer the old style as it's been said before its more fun, leaves more to the imagination. Am a huge huge fan read all the books several several times over and am always devestated when i finish them, wish they'd go on and on and on, am on my last 100 pages of a Friend of the family, been dragged away from it tonight, cruel. More more more!!!

Hi Lisa, I just read the first book of yours (for me) "Thirty nothing", I did not buy it for the cover but for the title. I personally didn't like the cover that much. I don't like to see who the book is about, I like to picture the characters in my own mind, so after I finihsed the book, I looked at the cover and felt dissapointed that the guy on the cover was apparently Dig. He was not as handsome or quirky as I pictured him to be in my mind. (I hope to God, that it wasn't a picture of your "now" husband or anyone you know). sorry if it was. I'm going to order your other books now and I'll look at those covers to see the difference. Are they different in America than in England? I wanted to ask you a question about your agent and getting published etc. Where do I ask that sort of thing on this web site? You may have guessed by my first comment that I'm one of those "rude Americans". Not for nothing, but my mom is English and all my cousins live over there, therefore I am drawn to books that take place in London or Essex, Surrey etc. My mom is the one who taught me to be direct!! Hope you're not offended, it's just a cover after all and the writing was hilarious and excellent. Hope my book is as well recieved---when it gets published. |

Hi Juliet!
Thanks for your comments - I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the book! I just wanted to let you know that the American cover is *completely* different to the UK cover. You must have thought I was mad describing that US cover as 'beautiful' when it is so incredibly far from beautiful! The bloke they've used for Dig is nothing like the image I had of him in my mind, either. If you have a little wander round my site you'll find pictures of the UK covers so you can see how much nicer they are. You'll also find a link to my guide to writing and getting published (including information about agents etc.) on the 'About Lisa' page.
Good luck with your writing. Let me know how you get on!

Hi, I thought the new cover was not as funky as the previous 3, however, I did like it. I have to say though - the American covers are a bit crappy. I like ours much more!! I think your website is top. It's really informative and I think shows that you have a real sense of fun. "One hit wonder" would be a brilliant film if it was done right. It is so well written and I am sure this would come across on the big screen. Thanks, Carly PS- your daughter is adorable!!! |

Hey Lisa and fellow lisa lovers (dunno if we have a name yet…lol)! Grrrrr Don't take this the wrong way coz I think u're lovely n stuff but……. I kinda liked the whole cartoon silhouettes of ppl and everything looking all squishy like. Hurrah for squishy!
But then again heaps of books of your genre have those sorts of covers and you’re special so need to stand out and look different me thinks!
Tho whatever u decide to go with….i do like the whole continuity thing of having your books have the same artwork style. (plus it also makes it easier for me to find your books in waterstones when I they look alike) bless me
Chris xx P.s Everyone eat Kettle Chips and drink Innocent Smoothes coz they’re great!

I really have to be honest and i must say i do prefer the old covers. I think if you havent read any of your books before and you saw that cover you wouldnt go for it. The old covers were wicked and i may only be 14 but doesnt that show your covers bring in a whole new audience. I loved the old covers because they were vibrant and you didnt need to look for the author, because they are all similar but different. I love you work but i certainly prefer the old covers |

Hi Lisa - I have liked all your covers (not that I'm a creep or anything!) and I have to say I liked "Friend" 's cover more. I bought the book because I'd read you before, but the cover suggested there was more depth to the book than the title, and the info on the back helped too. As a bloke who's into chick-lit (sorry - I bet you HATE that word) I am often hesitant to buy when I see a book with gold curly writing and pictures of spangly espadrilles (I'll usually get it from the library and read it in secret). Do you ever go back to St. Michael's? All the best, xx |
