Diary

June 2007

And here's one I made earlier...

Well, I am delighted to announce that at 3.06pm on Wednesday 16th May, Evie Scarlett emerged safely into the world. She weighed 9lbs 2ozs (and boy did I know it as I pushed every ounce of her out without drugs of any description. I am rather proud of this fact, as you can probably tell!). She has very short legs, a tummy like a barrel and red, ahem, hair. I’m not panicking about the red hair though, as it is exactly the same colour as my hair was as a newborn and I am now 100% pure mouse. Er, actually, thinking about it like that, maybe she'd be better off keeping the red hair!

She is three and half weeks old now and proving to be as angelic as her big sister was when she was a baby. She sleeps and eats and sleeps and eats and on the odd occasion when she is awake and not eating, she stares around the place with huge saucer eyes, looking like she can’t wait to get on with the business of being a little girl. She is very, very nice and we are all absolutely delighted.

Amelie is handling being usurped from her position of Beloved Centre of Our Universe pretty well. If the baby is getting a little too much fuss, she’ll start dancing wildly or jumping up and down or cuddling someone, slightly too hard, but on the whole she is very cool about the change of dynamics and I am very proud of her.

It is hard to believe that there was a life Before Baby, but apparently there was and I will have to consult my diary to remind myself exactly what it consisted of. Oh yes, of course, we bought a flat! Those who were here last quarter might remember that we had just had our offer accepted on the flat upstairs from us. Well, on April 11th we completed and we now have a stupid amount of extra rooms and very little money! We haven’t moved into it yet. We need to do a bit of building work first but hopefully we’ll start drifting upwards from the end of the summer. It's all very exciting indeed.

Amelie is unimpressed with the bonnet I slaved over for her Easter parade at nursery. Two minutes later she ripped it off and demanded to go home!

No holidays yet this year (!) but Jascha, Amelie and I went to Norfolk to stay with Jascha's parents for a couple of days in late April, which was lovely. And at the beginning of June, me, my sisters and our very good friend Libby all spent the night in a posh hotel in Sloane Square to celebrate Libby’s upcoming nuptials. We went to Soho House for the launch of Paige Toon’s super debut novel, Lucy in the Sky then on for a lovely dinner at the Bluebird Restaurant on the Kings Road. But generally speaking, given the combination of enormous bump, sore hips, no cash and now of course, new baby, I’ve done very little in the past three months. My misery (which I very kindly shared with you last quarter) abated at about the 36 week stage of pregnancy which meant that I at least enjoyed the last four weeks, having hated every minute of the preceding eight months. And then there was Evie …

And next … well, I’m 39 next month, then we’re off to Cornwall for a week with six friends and numerous children. Amelie is 4 on July 29th, I’ve got half a stone to lose, a whole set of abs to re-establish and then, at some point, I’ve got a book to finish! By the time I’m back here again in September I’ll be in the hell that is Choosing Stuff For New House. Now, some people like the process of choosing tiles/paint colours/doorknobs/handles/wallpaper/toilet cisterns and some people don’t. I fall into the latter camp. I hate it. I just want to wave a magic wand and for all the details to have been miraculously decided on and put in place.

So, a busy few weeks, but all nice stuff and as usual, life is sweet. I had my first pint in the beer garden of our local pub last weekend, in the sunshine, and boy was it worth the wait. I intend to do much of the same over the next few weeks!

I really hope you all have a fantastic summer and I’ll see you back here in September, by which time, of course, Evie will be sleeping through the night and I’ll be racing through my book,*

Until then, loads of love,

Lisa

* ha ha ha ha ha ha!!
